This article is a map. It says which screen in the VOOL web portal holds which setting, using the exact names you will see on screen — and, just as usefully, it says what the portal does not contain, so you do not go hunting for something that is not there.
First, know which VOOL you are looking at
VOOL has four separate surfaces. They look related but they are not the same thing, and a setting that exists in one may not exist in another. Almost every “I cannot find it” turns out to be a case of looking in the wrong one.
The VOOL mobile app (iOS and Android). Day-to-day charging: start and stop, charging modes, your car.
The web portal, app.vool.com. Sites, devices, people, prices, reports and invoices. This is what the rest of this article describes.
VOOL Public Charging, charge.vool.com. The public map that any driver can use to charge at a public VOOL site, with no account needed.
The device itself — the charger’s front panel and status lights, and the LMC’s own temporary WiFi setup page. Nothing about these lives in the portal.
The web portal at a glance
Down the left edge is a narrow icon bar. Hover over an icon to see its name. From top to bottom, the ones you are likely to have are:
Sites (map pin) — your locations, and the devices in them.
Vehicles (car) — the cars recorded in this workspace.
Reporting (bar chart) — charging sessions, exports and scheduled reports.
Access management (person) — members, groups, RFID cards and pricing rules.
Logs (clock) — a time-ordered record of what your devices reported.
News (bell) — product announcements.
Which icons you see depends on your role, so your bar may be shorter than a colleague’s. Along the top of the page are four more controls: a search magnifier, a settings gear, a language flag, and on the far right your account and workspace menu.
Two things people often look for in the wrong place. Switching workspace is in that top-right menu — click your name, and the workspaces you belong to are listed below it, with Create new workspace at the bottom. Your own account settings are in the same menu, under Settings: your name, whether you receive notification e-mails, and your password. The person icon in the left bar is not your profile — it is Access management, which is about other people.
Sites
Sites opens with a summary of every site you have — Revenue, Profit, Sessions and Consumption for the period chosen with the 24h / 1W / 1M / 6M / 1Y buttons — and then the list itself, Your sites, with a column each for Name, Contract, Occupancy and Public charging. Add a site is the button above the list.
Click a site name and you get three tabs: Overview, Health status and Load management.
On Overview there are two small panels at the top, each with a pencil icon that opens its editor: Details (the site’s address and its electricity pricing model) and Availability (whether the site is Private or Public, and at what price). Below them are the period figures, and then Devices and virtual points — your LMCs and virtual points in one table, your chargers in another, with Add a device above.
Why a charger is not working: the Health status tab
This is the single most useful screen in the portal and the least well known. Site → Health status lists everything currently wrong at that site, one row per problem, each tagged Error, Warning or Suggestion, with the device name and the actual message. Real examples: “Voltage too low L2.” against a charger, “The device is currently offline and not communicating.”, “LMC communication statuses are not found.”, and as a suggestion, “Please connect the standalone charger to LMC for proper functionality.”
The number on the tab is the count of open issues. If you have been told your charger has a fault and you want to know what the fault is, look here first. For what a numbered status code means, see our article on VOOL charger status codes.
A charger's own page
Click a charger anywhere it appears and you land on its page, which has the tabs Overview, Current activity and Sessions.
Overview shows the connector state and a Start charging control, a live power dial, and a Details panel containing exactly six things: Brand, Model, Firmware, Serial, Max power and Connectors. That is the whole panel — there is nothing else hidden in it.
Everything you can change sits behind the Configuration button at the top right. It opens a panel down the right-hand side with four parts: Settings, Connectivity, Actions and a red Danger Zone. Each of the first two has its own Edit button.
Where each charger setting lives
All of these are under Configuration on the charger’s page.
Rename a charger — Settings → Edit → Device name.
Limit the current — Settings → Edit → Current limit, in amperes.
Take a charger out of use — Settings → Edit → the Enabled tick box.
Auto start (charging begins as soon as a car is plugged in, with no card and no app) — Settings → Edit → Auto start.
Automatic charging programmes (scheduled and price-based charging) — Settings → Edit → Automatic charging programs allowed.
Let RFID cards work while the charger is offline — Settings → Edit → RFIDs will work offline.
Invert the pause input — Settings → Edit → Input pause invert, which the screen explains as “This inverses the control of charging pause function that is engaged by applying GND to digital input 2.” It appears only on chargers whose hardware and software support that input.
Attach a charger to an LMC or virtual point — Settings → Edit → Controller/Virtual point, under the Load management heading.
WiFi name and password — Connectivity → Edit → WiFi enabled, WiFi SSID, Password. There is also an Open connectivity wizard button that walks you through it.
Wired network — Connectivity → Edit → Ethernet enabled.
Mobile data — Connectivity → Edit → Cellular enabled. The screen states the terms: “Turning cellular on starts a 30-day free period, then 3.00 € a month.”
How the charger is wired into the system — Connectivity → Edit → Connection mode, which shows the selected mode (for example Standalone) and offers Choose connection mode manually.
Update the firmware — Actions → Update device. A coloured dot and a version number appear here when an update is waiting.
Restart the charger — Actions → Restart device.
Move a charger to a different site — Actions → Move device to another site.
See what the charger has been reporting — Actions → View logs.
Remove a charger — Danger Zone → Delete device.
The Connectivity summary above those buttons is worth reading on its own: it lists Cellular, WiFi with the network name and a Signal strength percentage, Ethernet, and whether Load management is on. A weak WiFi percentage here explains a lot of intermittent faults.
A charger that reaches the internet through an LMC rather than on its own looks different here, and it is not a fault: its Connectivity section lists only Load management and OCPP source: LMC, because the network connection belongs to the LMC, and its OCPP version reads “1.6 (Through LMC)”. Look at the LMC’s own page for the WiFi, Ethernet and cellular detail. When such a charger is already up to date, Actions offers Check for updates rather than Update device, and a green banner across the top of the page names the version it was last updated to, with a link to the logs.
When Auto start is greyed out
If Auto start and Automatic charging programs allowed are greyed out and cannot be ticked, the portal explains why on the same screen:
“At least one pricing rule applies to this device, therefore auto start or automatic charging programs will not be supported, as the system must identify the user to determine who should be billed.”
This is the usual reason behind a message in the app saying that automatic charging is not permitted on the device. It is not a fault and not something to switch off elsewhere: as long as a pricing rule applies to the charger, someone has to be identified before a session can start, so charging has to be started by a person — with an RFID card, or from the app. To change it, an Admin or Workspace manager has to change or remove the pricing rule under Access management → Pricing rules.
On a charger that has no pricing rule attached, both boxes are ordinary tick boxes and can be changed freely. So if a colleague can tick Auto start on one charger and you cannot on another, the difference is the pricing rule, not your role.
Load Management Controllers
An LMC’s page looks different from a charger’s. It has only one tab, Overview, which shows how much of the grid connection is in use, and a Current activity block with a dial per phase (L1, L2, L3) reading amperes and volts. Its Details are Serial number, Device name, Site, Type and Connection (the grid connection in amperes).
Its Configuration panel has its own set of settings: Device name, Grid connection, Load management, Power meter and External antenna. Connectivity is the same three rows — Cellular, WiFi, Ethernet. Actions are View logs, Move device to another site, Check for updates and Restart device, and the Danger Zone offers Factory reset device as well as Delete device. If the LMC is offline the panel says so at the top and the settings you can change are limited.
To see how the devices at a site are arranged, use Site → Load management. It draws the structure as a tree — each LMC with the chargers beneath it and the current limit on each — with Collapse all and Expand all, and a pencil to edit. Below the tree, Unassigned devices lists, in the portal’s own words, the chargers that “are not linked to any LMC or virtual point”. If load management is not behaving, this is where to look.
Vehicles
Vehicles in the left bar lists the cars in this workspace with their consumption, average consumption and cost per 100 km, total cost and mileage.
Be clear about what a vehicle record in the web portal is. Add a vehicle asks for three things and no more: Vehicle name, Battery capacity (kWh), and a Private car tick box (“Enable this for exclusive access to your vehicle’s data, ensuring privacy and security”). Opening an existing car with Vehicle details shows the same three fields. There is no make or model list in the web portal and no way to connect a manufacturer account here — linking a car to its manufacturer, which is what lets VOOL read the battery level, is done in the mobile app, and only for supported brands.
Reporting
Reporting has two tabs, Sessions and Report scheduler, and two buttons, Schedule and Export. Sessions can be narrowed by date range and by Filter; the filters you have applied appear as chips you can remove, with Clear filters beside them. Each row shows End time, Strategy (for example Charge now), Site and charger, Started by, Duration, Consumption in kWh, and Revenue, Profit and Cost in euros.
If Reporting is the only thing you can open, that is your role, not a fault. See the last section.
Access management: people, cards and prices
The person icon opens Access management, which carries four tabs. This is where most of the account-level settings people go looking for actually are.
Members — everyone in the workspace, each with a Role you can change from a drop-down and any Groups they belong to. Invite to workspace is the button. The four roles are Admin, Workspace manager, Member and Charge-only member.
Groups — collections of members, each with a Default pricing rule and the charging Strategies they may use. Create a group is the button.
RFID cards — every card known to the workspace, with its Name/Assignee, Identifier and Last use. To register a new card you do not need to type anything: as the screen says, “Show the card to the charger, it will appear here”. Cards that have been used but not yet assigned show as Unknown user, and you can then give them a name. Add an RFID card lets you enter one by hand.
Pricing rules — the rules that decide what a charging session costs, listed with Name, Created by, Model (Fixed or Cost + margin), Price and Billing mode. Create rule is the button. Remember that a pricing rule on a charger disables Auto start and automatic programmes on it.
Workspace settings, subscriptions and invoices
The gear icon in the top bar is about the workspace as a business, and opens four tabs.
Settings — Workspace details and Workspace logo; Company details for your registration information; then Billing details, Payment method and Payout details; and under General settings, Partner company.
Earnings — what you have been paid, with Total earned from paid invoices, Total sessions, Average session value, and a row per session showing the site, the customer’s e-mail and the amount, each downloadable.
Subscriptions — the VOOL plans available to this workspace and the ones you are on, with prices stated excluding VAT.
Payments — your invoices from VOOL, with Invoice date, Description, Invoice number, Payment method, subtotal, VAT and total, and a download button on each row.
Setting up electricity prices for a site
This is on the site, not on the charger: Site → Overview → Details (the pencil). Below the name, address and map is Pricing model, a choice between Market and Fixed.
Choosing Market asks for your Country so the exchange price can be applied, and whether you are billed on 15-min prices or Hourly prices. You can then switch on Use day/night transmission prices and, if it applies to your grid contract, Apply the nighttime transmission price on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). For Day you set a Start and End time and a Transmission cost in cents per kWh; Night takes the hours left over and its own transmission cost. Finally, Other fees and taxes (optional) takes anything else per kWh.
All prices entered here exclude VAT, and these numbers are what the portal uses to work out session costs — so if a cost looks wrong, check these fields before anything else.
Making a site public
Also on the site: Site → Overview → Availability (the pencil). The panel is titled Public charging and it explains itself: it makes the site available to the public on charge.vool.com, and “This site will only be visible when at least one of its chargers is online.”
Enable — the master switch.
Fixed or Market+margin, and with the latter a Set margin cents/kWh field.
Serial number or name — which of the site’s chargers are public. They appear as removable chips, so a site can be part public and part private.
Allow reservations — with a Free reservation period (optional) in minutes and a Reservation cost in cents per minute after that.
Show in public maps (Google Maps and others) — “Disable this if your chargers are meant for limited public access (e.g. semi-public or restricted parking).”
Show in VOOL public map (charge.vool.com) — “Disable this to make the site ‘unlisted’ – it will only be accessible via QR code or a direct link.”
Enable roaming — makes the site available in third-party charging apps through roaming partners.
Prices entered here also exclude VAT.
What a driver sees at charge.vool.com
charge.vool.com is a separate site with no account required. It opens as a map beside a list, headed Choose nearby chargers with a count of how many are available; each entry gives the site name, how many of its chargers are free (“Available 4 of 4”), the address and badges for power and connector type. Filters narrows the list by charge point availability — Available, Busy, Private. The menu button at the top holds Sites, Support and Login.
Choosing a site lists its chargers with Pricing, Power and Type. Choosing a charger shows a chart of the price in cents per kWh through the day with the coming hours spelled out beneath it, then the notice “You need to plug-in the charger, to start charging”, a Start charging button, a link to charging and pricing information, and the card and wallet types accepted. The button becomes usable once the cable is in the car — plug in first, then start.
Things the web portal does not contain
These come up often enough to be worth stating plainly. Looking harder will not find them.
A charger’s local IP address. It is not shown anywhere in the portal. The device Details panel holds only Brand, Model, Firmware, Serial, Max power and Connectors, and Connectivity shows the network type and signal, not an address. If you need the charger’s address on your own network, read it from your router’s list of connected devices.
A Modbus switch, or any list of charger parameters. The charger’s own firmware does have a Modbus parameter — 522 — Enable Modbus TCP/UDP interface — but it is a firmware parameter, and the portal has no Modbus page, no toggle and no parameter list, so Modbus cannot be turned on from here. Ask [email protected] to enable it for your serial number, or have your installer set it over Bluetooth. Our Modbus with VOOL article has the detail, including the charger software version it needs. This is true on the newest charger software as well, not only on older units.
A car make or model list. As above, portal vehicle records are a name and a battery capacity.
Anything about the LMC’s own WiFi setup page. Joining the LMC’s temporary hotspot to give it your WiFi details is done from your phone or laptop at the device, not through the portal.
Charging schedules and modes. Whether a charger may run automatic programmes is a portal setting; choosing the actual mode and times for your own charging is done in the mobile app.
If you cannot see any of this
What the portal shows you is decided by your role, which an Admin or Workspace manager sets under Access management → Members. A Charge-only member or a Member sees far less than an Admin — sometimes only Reporting — and device settings, pricing rules and workspace settings are not theirs to open. If a path in this article leads nowhere for you, you are not doing it wrong; ask whoever administers your workspace to check your role, or to make the change for you.
