This guide covers both versions of the VOOL Load Management Controller (LMC): the Wi-Fi version and the LTE version. The hardware, installation and load-management functions are the same; the versions differ only in how the LMC connects to the internet. The full installation manual and the quick guide (PDF) are in Manuals & Installation Guide.
The installation must be carried out by an authorised installer. Switch off the power from the main switch before installing the LMC and follow all local regulations.

Status LEDs
The LMC has three status LEDs: power, internet connectivity and charger status. Their meaning is explained in LMC Indicator LED Light.
1. Mount the LMC on a DIN rail
Before installation, switch off the power from the fuse box to avoid injury.
Install the LMC in a suitable place on the DIN rail. The LMC is 3.5 modules wide. The recommended circuit breaker for the LMC is 6 A, 3-pole, B curve.
2. Connect the current transformers
The LMC comes with three split-core current transformers (CTs), so the power cables do not need to be disconnected for installation. CT sets are available for 50 A (Ø 10 mm), 100 A (Ø 16 mm), 250 A (Ø 24 mm), 600 A (Ø 35 mm) and 1000 A (Ø 45 mm). The CT window must enclose the cable including its insulation – or, for busbars, the busbar diagonal.
If your main fuse is larger than 1000 A, contact your wholesaler or [email protected].
Before clamping the current transformers onto the wires, make sure their connector is plugged into the LMC. Otherwise the current transformers can be damaged.
Mount each CT on the correct phase (L1, L2, L3) with the arrow pointing from the grid towards the building. Select the installed CT set for the LMC in the VOOL Portal during setup.
3. Use an existing energy meter
If current transformers are already installed in the distribution board, check their compatibility before connecting them to the LMC.
If there is an energy meter on site that supports Modbus RTU (RS485, LMC pins 1–2) or Modbus TCP (the meter must be in the same LAN as the LMC), its metering data can be used for load management. Ask your supplier about compatibility.
4. Connect the AC power supply
4.1 Three-phase
Connect the wires to the supplied power connector and plug the connector into the LMC. Switch on the power and check that the LEDs light up. If any LED stays off, see Troubleshooting LMC.
4.2 Single-phase
Connect the wires (PE, N, L1) to the power connector and plug it into the LMC. Switch on the power and check that the LEDs light up.
5. Connect the LMC to the chargers
Chargers can be connected to the LMC over CAN (twisted-pair cable, for example CAT6 – the system uses the 4th and 5th wire) or over the local network (LAN, by cable or Wi-Fi). The last charger on a CAN line must have an end resistor. For load management and internet connections we always recommend cables: they give the most stable result and avoid issues with the customer's local network.
5.1 Scenario 1: chargers and LMC in the same LAN, connected with Ethernet cables

5.2 Scenario 2: chargers and LMC in the same LAN via Wi-Fi

5.3 Scenario 3: chargers and LMC connected via CAN, only the LMC is online
The chargers do not need their own internet connection – they communicate with the VOOL server over CAN through the LMC. This is the recommended setup.

5.4 Scenario 4: chargers and LMC connected via CAN, chargers online via Wi-Fi or 4G
The LMC only needs an internet connection for configuration. Set up every charger as shown in the picture below. Autoconfiguration does not work for this setup.

5.5 Scenario 5: chargers and LMC connected via CAN and LAN
The LMC is online via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and the chargers are in the same LAN. The last charger on the CAN line must have an end resistor.
5.6 Scenario 6 (LTE version): LMC online via LTE, chargers via CAN
The LMC LTE connects to the internet over the mobile network with its integrated eSIM; the chargers are connected over CAN as in scenario 3 and do not need their own internet connection. Recommended for sites without a usable local network (parking garages, new buildings, sites where the customer's IT network cannot be used).
If the internet connection is lost
The LMC keeps managing the load when the internet connection is lost – in every scenario above. The devices may not be visible in the VOOL Portal until the connection is restored. If a charger loses its connection to the LMC (CAN or LAN), that charger is no longer part of load management.
Autoconfiguration
For scenarios 1–3: add all devices to your site by scanning their QR codes, connect them to the internet if needed, add the LMC group to each charger, restart the LMC in the app and start autoconfiguration. The LMC then sets the charger parameters for load management automatically.
6. Connect the LMC to the internet
The LMC can be connected online via Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi or – LTE version – the LTE mobile network. When several connections are available, the LMC uses Ethernet first, then Wi-Fi, then LTE.
Ethernet: connect an Ethernet cable with internet access to the Ethernet port on the LMC.
Wi-Fi (LMCs manufactured from 2025): press the button on the LMC for at least 1 second to switch on Bluetooth (the connectivity LED turns blue). Connect to the LMC in the VOOL mobile app, select the Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
Wi-Fi (LMCs manufactured before 2025, without Bluetooth): when the LMC has no internet connection it opens a Wi-Fi hotspot named ‘LMC ID123456789’ (after the serial number). Connect to it with the password ‘Vool1234’ and select your Wi-Fi network. If the setup page does not open automatically, open a browser and enter any web address. The password for the offline setup page is ‘service’ (firmware 4.7.0 or later).
LTE (LTE version only): the LMC LTE has an integrated eSIM – no SIM card, APN or operator settings are needed. Activate LTE for the LMC in the VOOL Portal. The LMC usually comes online within about 3 minutes; the first connection can take up to 15 minutes.
Electrical cabinets are usually made of metal, which blocks radio signals. When using Wi-Fi or LTE, connect the supplied antenna(s) and place them outside the cabinet, vertically and at least 20 cm apart. On the LTE version do not swap the Wi-Fi and LTE antennas.
7. Add the LMC to the VOOL Portal
Go to app.vool.com and log in (on a phone, tablet or PC). Then:
Add a new site or select an existing one
Add device
Select manufacturer – VOOL
Scan or enter the serial number and PIN (on the packaging and on the LMC housing)
When the device is online it appears in the device list
Add all devices of the installation to the same site, then select which chargers are connected to the LMC in the site setup.
8. Adjust the LMC settings
Find the LMC among your devices in the VOOL app or Portal.
Set the size of the building's main fuse (in amperes) and select the installed current transformer set (50 / 100 / 250 / 600 / 1000 A).
The current setting must match the main fuse size so that dynamic load management (DLM) works correctly and no damage occurs.
Restart the LMC after changing the settings.
9. Ripple control
Ripple control lets the grid operator pause charging with an external relay signal. There is no separate module: the function uses pin 5 (digital input DI1) of the LMC's own 5-pin connector. When DI1 is connected to ground (GND), the LMC pauses charging on all connected chargers until the connection is released. LMC variants with ripple control have their own product codes, e.g. VLMCL50ARC, VLMCL100ARC and VLMCL250ARC (LTE versions).
Pin | Signal | Use |
1 | RS485 B | Modbus RTU (energy meter) |
2 | RS485 A | Modbus RTU (energy meter) |
3 | GND | Ground |
4 | GND | Ground – connect the control relay COM terminal |
5 | DI1 | Digital input (ripple control) – connect the control relay NO terminal |
Wiring: connect the relay COM terminal to LMC pin 4 (GND) and the NO terminal to pin 5 (DI1). When the relay closes, charging pauses; when it opens, charging resumes. On sites with several LMCs, connect the signal to the top-level LMC – it passes the pause on to the LMCs below it (requires current LMC firmware).
Electrical data: input voltage range −0.5 … +30 V; internal pull-up +5 V / 160 Ω; ESD protection 15 kV (IEC 61000-4).
10. Multipoint and multilevel load management
If you are installing several LMCs in an apartment building or commercial property, contact [email protected] for detailed instructions.
Once the LMC is set up, you can add chargers or link the LMC with existing chargers on the site.
