Mobile data (4G) on VOOL devices: how to get it working

How the built-in SIM is activated, how to check whether mobile data is on, and what to send us if the device still won't come online.

Many VOOL chargers and LMCs contain a built-in SIM (eSIM) so the device can reach the internet over the mobile network instead of Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This is useful where there is no usable local network — a detached garage, a car park, a site where the router is far from the charger.

How activation works

The SIM is fitted in the factory, but it is not active when the device arrives. VOOL activates it, and the mobile connection is then configured on the device.

To have a SIM activated, send us the serial number of each device at [email protected]. Installers commissioning several units can send the serial numbers together in one message — we will activate them as a batch.

Checking whether mobile data is on

  • In the VOOL Portal (app.vool.com), open the device and look at the configuration panel. It shows the enabled networks (cellular, Wi-Fi, Ethernet) and the active network — the one the device is actually using.

  • On site, over Bluetooth, connect to the charger from the VOOL app and check that mobile data is switched on in the device settings.

If mobile data is enabled and the device is still offline

Check the signal strength first — a device in a basement, a metal cabinet or a reinforced building may have no usable mobile coverage at all. If the signal is good and the device still does not come online, the SIM itself may not be in service yet on our side.

Send us:

  • The device serial number

  • Whether mobile data shows as enabled on the device

  • The signal strength shown, if you can see it

  • Whether the device has ever been online

We can then check the state of the SIM directly and put it right.

Two limits worth knowing

  • Mobile data is metered. Each device has a modest monthly data allowance — enough for normal operation, reporting and charging control, but it is not a general internet connection.

  • Firmware updates over mobile are restricted. Automatic updates are not pushed over a mobile connection by default, to avoid using the allowance and to avoid interrupting an update on a weak link. If a device on mobile data needs a firmware update, ask us and we will start it deliberately.

Where a wired or Wi-Fi connection is available, it is still the better option: it is faster, has no data limit, and firmware updates run normally.
