The app says charging started, but nothing is charging

With a scheduled or price-based program, the session starts immediately and charging starts later. Why 0.0 kW is usually correct.

You start a session, the app says charging started, and then it shows 0.0 kW and the charger reports the car as plugged in but not charging. In most cases nothing is wrong.

Starting a session is not the same as starting to charge

Three of the charging programs deliberately charge later, not now:

  • Schedule — charges only during the time slots you picked.

  • Price-based — charges when the market price is under your limit.

  • Cheapest hours — works out the cheapest slots between now and your ready-by time, and books them.

When you start one of these, the session begins straight away and the charger books its slots. Charging begins when the first slot does — which may be several hours away. Until then the connector stays plugged in and the power reading is 0.0 kW, because no power is flowing yet. That is the program working correctly.

A wording problem we know about
The app currently says “charging started” at the moment the session starts, which is what makes this confusing. It should say the session has started. We are changing the wording; the behaviour underneath is right.

How to see when it will actually charge

Expand the session in the sessions view at app.vool.com. It shows the program type, the session length that was requested, the ready-by time, and when the program was set — so you can see what the charger was told to do. See Reading the sessions view.

In the mobile app, the price graph shows which slots have been booked.

If you need power now

Stop the session and start Charge now instead. It ignores price and schedule and charges immediately at whatever the site can give.

If it is inside a booked slot and still not charging

Now it is worth investigating. In rough order of likelihood:

What to send us

If none of that explains it, send the charger serial number, the date and time you started the session, and which program you chose. We can see from the logs what the charger was asked to do and what it did.
